“The Strangest Fruits”

This collection aims to reclaim dark moments in history…

Inspired by Abel Meeropol’s poem “The Strangest Fruit,” I have always wanted to highlight the “fruits” or characteristics of life, that a black woman possesses, especially when our existence is on the line. The art pieces below draw inspiration from the stories of such black women, as they faced white rage in the early 1900s. I aim to reclaim their deaths in history as moments where being a black woman meant defying the status quo, speak out against hate, and facing death head on.
