What is blackfruit?

Picture a dark, black skinned fruit. May not look appetizing on the outside, but on the inside it holds the sweetest fragrance, vibrant hues, and tastes of an unimaginable fantasy. You just have to get past the color of its skin…

About me

Artist Bio:

Hey Y’all! I’m Kendra Lee, a born and raised black Austinite who creates digital art to explore the black female experience throughout time. Growing up in Austin, I embraced the artistic weird vibe, but I also experienced the all too familiar hardships that many black females growing up in America endure. In my art, I explore the black female experience using graphic art styles and energetic color palettes to highlight the wide spectrum of black femininity. Black history serves as my inspiration while I create my work. As part of my process, I research common black female experiences throughout history to bring out my artistic interpretation of our collective struggles and triumphs. I value showcasing the black female experience in efforts to add to the representation of our culture.

Art Brand Statement

I bare my art in honor of the ancestors who met a fate of hate. Strange fruit to blackfruit; experience a colorful taste.

About Blackfruit:

Blackfruit is my concept of how the power of the ancestors flows through our generational blood, continuously nourishing the seeds of future black generations, who then ripen to bear blackfruit.

I view my art as my blackfruit. What’s yours?

AbOut the art

My art is influenced by graphic art, black history, and surrealism. Being born and raised in Austin, TX, I can’t help but be a little weird too.
